Aigues Mortes

A fortified medieval town in the Carmargue, famous for its natural flora and fauna, bulls and wild horses.

Food and drink. The flat plains produce fragrant fruit, vegetables, rice and salt -  sprinkle the crystals onto fresh grilled fish! Over 40 restaurants, many emphasizing fresh produce, or regional dishes like bull stew. Lively Wednesday and Sunday market.

Local activities. Discovery tours to the Carmargue by cruise boat, or horse and carriage. Visit the salt producers, the paddy fields or walk the ramparts, see the Constance Tower. The many Art Galleries and Art/Craft shops will delight. Miles of sandy, "Blue-Flagged" Mediterranean beaches are 8 mins by car; or bike or ride the train. Also, casinos and theme parks.

Nearby. The Pont du Gard is on the outskirts of the old Roman city of Nîmes. A circular drive will take in Avignon, Arles, Sainte Marie de la Mer and the Carmargue. Along the coast, La Grande Motte, Palavas, Carnon and Montpellier. Inland, Pic St Loup for hiking and climbing, or continue on the glassblowers route and quaint villages, Sauve and Claret.
